アカデミーのものづくり研究会は大学卒業レベルの人が対象で、社会人経験のある人も多く入ってきます。一方、高校卒業レベルの人を対象にしたコースもあり、エンジニア科と呼ばれます。エンジニア科の学生の中にも少数ですが木工を学ぶ学生がいます。
エンジニア科の黒田君の卒業課題研究は、注文制作の椅子のデザインを提案することです。
Craft and furniture making dept. of Gifu Academy is designed as a post graduate course. There is an undergraduate course as well, and a few students are studying woodworking there.
Kei Kuroda's graduation work is to design some bespoke chairs.
今回の顧客の要望は多岐にわたります。
まず一番大事なことは、材料に関するこだわりです。
ご自分の庭に小さな苗を植えてから３０年で直径４０ｃｍほどに育った大きなソメイヨシノを伐ることになり、家族の成長を見守ってくれていたその木を家具として再生させることです。２年ほど前に伐られた木は施主自らアカデミーにトラックで運び込み、アカデミーで製材されました。そういった材料の制限もデザインの中に取り込まなくてはいけません。
また、現在の利用状況、家族の体型、誰がどのように使うのかといったことを調査していきます。
それらの要望を椅子というモノにデザインとして立ち上げ、自分のイメージをスケッチに起こして、模型を作ってプレゼンしました。プレゼンは大成功！お客さんの反応は上々でした。
There have been many requests from the client.
They want furniture made from a cherry tree that was planted thirty years ago in their garden. The tree, felled two years ago, have been brought to the Academy to be sawn. The diameter was 400mm. The student needs to take the size of the given material into account when he designs some chairs.
He needs to know who use the chairs, how they want to use them, as well as the propotion of the clients.
This month Kei took a 1/5 scale model of his design to the clients' house for a presentation. They liked his design and the presentation was successful.
しかし、椅子のデザインはここからが難しい。
自分のイメージと制作方法、木材の強度のバランスを考えながらまとめ上げないといけません。
課題研究も大詰めで、まだまだ基本的なことさえ勉強中の黒田君にとっては毎日が大詰めでしょう。
２月の発表までに本番を想定した試作を実際に制作します。このような機会を与えてくれたお客さんにも感謝です。
こんな顧客とのやり取りの機会を学生のうちから得られるのもアカデミーの特徴です。
The next step must be the real challenge for Kei. He has to materialize his image into chairs with assured making method. The balance of design and strength should be considered, too.
As an undergraduate student, Kei still needs to acquire enormous amount of knowledge and skill on woodworking. His challenge continues every day toward the deadline of the graduation work. He is supposed to finish a prototype by February.
We are grateful to the client for giving such an opportunity to Kei. This is one of the advantages to study at the Academy that you get real commissions from real clients.
