これ、南京鉋（なんきんがんな）といいます。
曲面や棒状のものを削るのに使います。たとえば椅子の肘掛けのところを緩やかに丸く削ったり、スプーンの柄の部分を削ったり。
この南京鉋をつくる授業が、ものづくり研究会の２年生を対象に行われました。といってもずいぶん前、５月のことなのですが、学生の脇でつくりかけていた自分の鉋をなかなか仕上げる機会がなく、ようやく最近できたので写真を撮ってみました。
Nankin-ganna, or spokeshave is a tool for shaping round surface and spindles. We often use it to shape the arm of chairs, spoons, etc. There was a lesson for the second year students to make their own spokeshaves in May. I started making one with them but there has not been time to finish it until this month. It is finally done and here it is.
この授業を担当していただいたのは滋賀県の木工家・旭逸也さん。木工はもとより道具全般にもとても造詣の深い方です。
Mr.Itsuya Asahi, a furniture designer/maker in Shiga pref., gave us the lesson. He has a profound knowledge of woodworking tools as well as furniture making.
ここに並べてあるのは旭さんの自作の南京鉋ですが、興味深かったのは用途に応じて柄の幅や曲がり具合が異なること。平面を削る台鉋は、見た目は同じでも荒削り用、平面出し用、仕上げ用など、台を微妙に違えてあるのですが、南京鉋も同じように荒削り用、仕上げ用などとつくり分けてあるのです。
The photo below shows various shapes and sizes of his hand-made spokeshaves. The width and the curve of the base is different from each other according to its purpose. Japanese block planes' base have slightly different shape at the bottom according to whether it is used for roughing, flattening, or smoothing. The same applies to spokeshaves.
２年生の３人は、３日間かけて自分の南京鉋をつくりました。
自分の道具を自分でつくる。一度体験しておくと、仕事に応じて必要な道具を自作できるようになります。
僕もグリーン・ウッドワーク（生木の木工）の椅子づくりなどに使うので、あと何本かつくろうと思っています（１本に７ヶ月かかるようでは、次が仕上がるのはいつになるやら・・・）。
The second year students made their own spokeshaves in three days.
This experience would help them in the future when they want a particular shape on their work. They can make a particular-shaped tool for it.
I am going to make some more for my green woodworking projects (if I have enough time!).
