ものづくり研究会の同僚・山口が今月、岐阜県高山市の「森林たくみ塾」の依頼を受けて木工旋盤の技術講習に行ってきました。たくみ塾では最近木工旋盤を導入したので、まずはスタッフが使い方を学ぶための講習です。
西洋の木工旋盤は手軽に木の器などが作れるので、ホビーとして人気が高まっているようです。ただプロ向けの指導ができるところとなると、そう多くはありません。
山口はオーストラリアで家具職人として働いた経歴があり、木工旋盤の技術を身につけて帰ってきました。アカデミーでは授業に旋盤を取り入れているほか、一般向けの生涯学習講座も年に何度も開いているので、実績を買われての登板です。
山口が行う旋盤講座は、今回のようなプロ向けのものから小学生向けのものまでさまざま。対象者によって材料や制作物を変えたり、はじめにお話しする内容を変えたりして、参加者が限られた時間で必要な技術を身につけてものが作れるよう、工夫してあります。今回は「できるだけ多くの技術を見せる」ことがテーマ。もちろん実技もありました。
Hiroshi Yamaguchi, a lecturer at the craft and furniture making dept., went to Shinrin Takumi Juku in Takayama, Gifu pref., to give a technical tuition on woodturning lathe for their staffs. Takumijuku is a private two-year-course college of furniture making, and they introduced some lathes into their workshop recently.
Western style woodturning lathes are getting popular as a hobby in Japan. But there is not many people who can give a technical tuition, especially to the professionals. Hiroshi has worked in Australia as a furniture maker, and he acquired his woodturning skills there. Now he teaches woodturning at the Academy to the post graduate students as well to the public at the short courses.
He changes the contents of the lecture and the product according to the level of participants at the course: from children to the professionals. This time he concentrated on showing as many techniques as possible in a day course since they are professional furniture making tutors.
ところで山口も僕も、森林たくみ塾で木工の修行をしました。かつての先生に技術を教えに行ったわけですね。お世話になった学校に、こんな形で恩返しができるというのはいいですよね。僕もお声がかかれば足踏み旋盤かついで行くつもりです。
Yamaguchi originally studied woodworking at Takumijuku. Having graduated ten years ago, he now teaches his skills to his former tutors. I am another graduate of Takumijuku and am willing to do the same, possibly with some pole lathes, which I studied in Britain.
それにしても、恩師たちが旋盤を操る姿は、どこか微笑ましいです＾＾。
