野口装美の社長、野口英一さんによる２回目の実習は、同じ形、同じ厚み、同じ生地の座を、中身を変えて座り心地を比べるものです。
We made three different seats with the same shape, thickness and the covering material but different stuffing at Mr.Hidekazu Noguchi's second lesson.
サンプルの椅子は、一昨年ものづくり研究会が依頼を受けて他の学校の食堂のために制作したもの。オリジナルの椅子の座は木でしたが、２０ミリ程度の薄い座に変えました。
Those sample chairs were made by the Craft and Furniture Dept. for the dining room of other college. The original seats were solid wood, but we changed them to 20mm thick upholsetered ones.
まず同じ合板を３枚用意して、うち２枚は中をくり抜きました。
くり抜いたものの１枚には伸縮性のあるベルトを、もう１枚には伸縮性のあるシートを張ります。
残りの１枚にはくり抜かず、そのままウレタンを入れました。
The base of two seats were cut out in the middle. One was covered with flexible sheet, the other with flexible belts.
The last one has no cutout and were stuffed with foam.
こうしてできあがった３枚。
見た目は同じでも・・・

but the underside.
実際に座り心地を試してみたのですが、わずか２０ミリの座の厚さで、まったく違う座り心地を作り出せることがわかります。
いちばん好評だったのは伸縮性のあるシートを張ったもの。
逆にいちばん不評だったのは、合板をくり抜かず、ただウレタンを入れただけのもの。座るとウレタンがつぶれて合板が感じられ、痛いのです。
野口さんはそのことを「底つき感がある」といいます。この底つき感をなくし、薄い座でもいかに座り心地をよくするかがプロの工夫のしどころなのだそうです。
We then tried each one of them. The best seat was the one with flexible sheet. The worst was the one with no cutout. You feel plywood base touching your bottom.
That is what professionals like Mr.Noguchi are the most careful about. It depends on upholsterer's technique how they provide comfort even with such thin seat, without giving a feel of plywood base.
この黒い座は、野口さんが会社で張って持って来られたもので、合板はくり抜いてありません。でも底つき感がないのです！秘密は中に入れてあるウレタン。この固さを調節することにより、こんなに薄い座でも底つきせず、快適な座り心地を得ることができます。
This black seat was upholstered at Mr.Noguchi's company. There is no cutout on the plywood, but you don't feel the plywood under your bottom. The secret is the foam. Hard foam gives a comfortable feel.
野口さんによる２日間の実習は学生にもとても好評。学ぶことがたくさんありました。
椅子の座り心地を考えるとき、家具職人は背や座の角度、形などに注意を払うのですが、座の張り方を工夫するだけでもこれだけ座り心地が変わってくるのは驚き。いい座張り職人さんとつきあうことが大切ですね。
There were a lot of things to learn in the two days of Mr.Noguchi's lesson. Furniture makers tend to pay more attention to back/seat angles and design, but good upholstery improves a chair dramatically. 'Be in touch with a good upholsterer' is the key to make a good chair.
