１２月、ものづくり研究会ではさまざまな外部講師の方にお越しいただきましたが、トリを飾っていただくのは、飾るトリをお作りになる方です。
内山春雄さん。木象嵌のベテランであり、野鳥彫刻（バードカービング）の第一人者でもあります。厚生労働省の認定する「現代の名工」に、バードカービングの分野で初めて選ばれた方でもあります。
今回は１、２年生向けに講義を、そして２年生向けには３日間にわたる象嵌の実習をお願いしました。
We invited Mr.Haruo Uchiyama, a speicialist of marquetry and the Japanese leading bird carver. He was certified as a 'modern master craftsman' of bird carving by the government.
He gave a lecture to the first and the second year studetns, followed by three days of marcuetry lesson for the second year students.
ものづくり研究会が講座運営に関わる郡上市の「しろとり木遊館」で内山さんの作品展が開かれていたことが、講義をお願いすることになったきっかけです。内山さんご自身が次世代への教育に積極的でおられることもあり、ご快諾いただきました。
We became to know Mr.Uchiyama at Shirotori Mokuyukan, a craft and timber shop in Gujo. He was having an exhibition of his work when we were running a craft making course there. He is very keen to pass on his knowledge and skills to the next generation, so he gave his ready consent on a lecture at Academy.
お持ちいただいた作品の数々は、ため息の出るものばかり。ものづくりの世界の奥深さを改めて感じさせられました。講義では内山さんが並々ならぬ努力を続けて来られたことがうかがえるのですが、それを明るく飄々とお話になるのにも感心してしまいました。
Every piece of his work is just breathtaking. We can easily imagine that he has been through tough life as a craftman from his work, but he talks as if every hardship was fun. That deeply impressed us.
日本の象嵌には3.3ミリの板で組む「一分象嵌」と、五分五厘（17ミリ）の厚みで組んで薄くスライスする「銑（せん）象嵌」があるのだそうです。内山さんはその両方を体得しておられます。
There are two sorts of marquetry in Japan. One uses 3.3mm thick veneer, and the other uses 17mm thick board.
内山さんが若い頃に作られた、一分象嵌の作品。書の一筆一筆、すべて象嵌です！

こちらはお土産にいただいた銑象嵌。銑鉋（せんがんな）と呼ばれる道具で0.16ミリに削り、17ミリの厚さから80枚の作品が生まれます。0.16ミリ！
This piece was sliced down to 0.16mm by a plane after 17mm thick marquetry work was assembled together. He gets 80 slices from one piece of work!
こちらはコアジサシのバードカービング。すべて木でできています。近寄ってみても、なかなか木と分からない精巧さ。
山科鳥類研究所でさまざまな鳥の死骸を解剖し、骨格や筋肉を調べるところから始められたと聞いて、またびっくり。
His carving work of least terns. All made of wood. You don't notice it's a fake even you get closer.
He started his bird carving career by visiting the leading bird reseach institute regularly and examining the carcasses and mustles of dead birds.
内山さんのバードカービングは市販されておらず、博物館の展示が主です。
そのほか絶滅の危機にあるアホウドリの繁殖を促すためにデコイを作ったり、内山さん自ら各地の小中学校でカービングを教えるなど、自然保護活動や教育活動にも熱心に取り組んでおられて、興味深いお話は尽きることがありませんでした。内山さんのホームページ、ぜひご覧になってみてください。
His bird carvings are not for sale. They go mainly to museums. He is keen on conservation activities and many decoys have been made for keeping albatrosses and other species from extinction. ２年生の３人は講義のあと課題を与えられ、さっそく制作にかかりました。結果はまた後日。
