３日間にわたる象嵌名人・内山春雄さん直々の指導のもと、ものづくり研究会２年生の３人は象嵌を完成させました！今回の課題はやまめとあまご。さまざまな色合いの日本の木を使い、ひとつひとつの模様を切り抜いて、魚の姿を描いていきました。
The second-year students have finished their work after three days of practice with the master craftman Mr. Haruo Uchiyama. He asked each one to make a trout. Each piece of the trout was inlayed, using various colours of Japanese timber.
このような糸鋸を使った象嵌は明治の中頃に日本に入ってきて大正期にピークを迎えたのだそうですが、それ以降、木工象嵌が生かされる場所は減り続けています。
３日間の実習を終えて、学生からは「今後の自分の作品づくりに採り入れてみたい」という声がありました。内山さんからも「象嵌の技術は必ず次の世代にも生き続ける。自分なりの工夫で、新しい象嵌を生み出していってほしい」とのお話がありました。
今回の実習の成果が、これからのものづくりにどう生かされるか楽しみですね。
This kind of flet saw marquetry was introduced to Japan in mid Meiji era (approx. 120 years ago), and the popularity passed its peak in Taisho (80-90 years ago). The market keeps declining since then.
Mr.Uchiyama believes that the Japanese marquetry technique will survive to the next generation and he hopes those young students use the technique in new way. The students are willing to use them, too. I look forward to seeing them.
