今週は谷進一郎さんに、ご自身の制作活動と李朝家具について講義をしていただきました。
谷さんは長野県小諸市で３０年以上にわたって家具を作ってこられた木工家であり、信州木工会の役員として長野県内の木工関係者への情報発信や研究活動を続けてもおられます。また李朝家具についての造詣も深く、教官・学生一同お話を伺うのを楽しみにしていました。
Mr.Shin-ichiro Tani gave us a lecture on his work and Korean traditional furniture.
Mr.Tani has been working as a furniture designer/maker in Komoro, Nagano pref., for more than thirty years. He has also been providing various information to the other woodworkers as a director of Shinshu Mokkokai, woodworkers association in Nagano. He is renowned for his research on Korean traditional furniture as well. So we all have been looking forward to his lecture.
当日は小諸から４時間かけて美濃へお越しいただいたのですが、トラック満載の作品や資料にびっくり！教室中に作品を並べて、贅沢な講義となりました。
He surprised us when he arrived driving full load of truck for four hours from Komoro. The lecture room was filled with his work and his collection of Korean furniture.
繊細な曲線をもつデザインは谷さん独自のもの。どれも拭き漆で仕上げられ、深い光沢を放っています。
その一方で、釿（ちょうな）で削り出した豪快な作品もありました。アジアに共通する生活用具、民具のイメージを形にしたものだそうで、とても魅力的でした。
Each piece of Tani's work has distinctive curves and deep gloss of Japanese lacquer. In contrast there are some pieces roughly finished with a hatchet which were Inspired by Asian folk crafts.
李朝家具は接合部分などにずいぶん複雑な加工が施されている一方で、不思議なほど粗雑なままの部分もあり、そのことが谷さんの関心を呼んだのだそうです。完璧を求める中国の家具、繊細な日本の家具に対して、親しみやゆとりが感じられる、とのことでした。
Traditional Korean furniture often has elaborate joints and very rough surface in the same piece, and it attracted Mr.Tani. He described the character of Chinese furniture as 'aspiring perfect', Japanese as 'sensitive and elegant', and Korean as 'intimate and relaxed'.
朝鮮半島では床暖房が使われるため、箱物家具に脚がついて熱を逃がすようになっているのですが、日本の家具とはまったく違う美しさを作り上げているように感じられました。なんとも絶妙なバランスなのです。椅子に座る生活空間にも合いそうなプロポーションです。
Most of Korean cabinets have short legs to avoid the heat from the floor heating. Floor heating is traditional and still popular in Korean houses. Those short legs create a beautiful propotion, which is totally different from Japanese ones. Although Koreans sit on the floor, those cabinets seem to suit the room with chairs as well.
講義のあとは、学生のおもてなしによる交流会。ここでもいろいろとお話をうかがうことができました。
同僚・山口の子どもも同席で、アットホームな交流会でした。
After the lecture we had a party prepared by our students. A lecturer's kids were with us, too.
森林文化アカデミーのものづくり研究会は現在学生数５人の小さな学部ですが、日本を代表する木工家にお越しいただき、直接作品に触れたりお話を聞くことができるというのは、ここに勤める僕が言うのも変ですが、なんと贅沢なことだろうと思いました。
谷さん、長時間にわたってお付き合いいただきありがとうございました。
What a great opportunity it was to have a leading Japanese designer/maker for such a small department with only five students! Great thanks to Mr.Tani.
