きょう１月１７日は「椅子の日」です。ご存知でしたか？１、１７をじっと眺めていると片仮名の「イ」「ス」に見えてくるのが由来です。・・・というのはウソですが、きょうは工房に入っていた学生７人全員が椅子づくりに取り組んでいた、珍しい日でした。コース別、学年別にさまざまな授業科目が実施されているので、全員が椅子だけ、などということはあまりないのです。
まずは前回お伝えしたエンジニア科木のコースの学生たち。きょうから木取り（材料を必要な寸法にすること）が始まりました。この授業は僕が担当です。４人の学生がそれぞれ別のデザインを持ってきて、一気に木取り開始！
しかも１人は「生木でやりたい」というので、機械を使わず丸太をナタで割ってもらうところから。
残りの３人は機械を使いますが、ものづくりの学生たちに比べると機械に触れる時間が少ないので、去年教えた機械の使い方の復習から。
これを朝から夕方まで教官一人で丸一日！お手玉４つを片手で操っている心境でした＾＾；
The seventeenth of January is 'chair's day' in Japan. The Japanese government registered it because the shape of 1 and 17 looks like two characters of Japanese word 'chair'...
Of course that's not true, but at least in the Academy, it was. Every student in the workshop was making a chair today. We have different curriculums according to their courses and grade, so it is quite rare to see all the students in the workshop are doing one thing.
The undergraduate students started machining today for their stools. Four students with four different designs, and only one tutor (me!). One of them wants to do green woodwork so I prepared a log and let him cleave it. The rest of them use machines but I had to run through how to use the machines again because the undergraduate students haven't had enough opportunity to touch those machines compared to the postgraduate students.
This stool making class continued whole day. It was just like juggling four balls in one hand.
木のコース２年生の黒田君は、卒業課題制作が大詰めです。年末に、注文主のお宅でデザインを打ち合わせてきた彼です。
椅子の難しいところは、ひきだしなどの箱物と違ってさまざまな角度で木と木が組み合わさっていること。接合部分は、とても複雑な計算や加工が必要なのです。
彼はここ１週間機械の前に立ちっぱなしで悪戦苦闘中。毎日何度かSOSが発信されるので、そのたびに加工のしかたを説明して、再度挑戦。少しずつ前に進んでいます。でももう時間ないぞ、がんばれ！
The second-year undergraduate student Kei Kuroda is having a tough time on his graduation work.
He proposed his chair design to the client in December and has been accepted.
But the difficult thing of chair making is that many components are joined together at complex angles. It requires complicated calculation and machining.
He has been in front of the overhead router for this whole week. He sends an SOS several times a day and tutors explain how to solve the problem. He is making a progress gradually but the time is running out!
ものづくり研究会１年生の２人は、同僚の山口が担当する椅子づくり。
学生それぞれの体型測定から始まり、CADによる図面制作、と本格的。基本デザインは山口ですが、寸法や細部のデザインは制作する学生自身が座りやすいように変えてあります。
背の加工では、蒸気で蒸して木を曲げる「曲げ木」の過程も体験。きょうは曲がった背を成形して、いよいよ組み上がった椅子に取り付け、という段階でした。あとは椅子の座を自分で張ってできあがりです。
Two postgraduate students are making standard chairs. Each student measured their own body, and made a CAD drawing. The basic design of the chair is done by the tutor Hiroshi Yamaguchi but the detail measurement and design has been changed by each students so that it fits their body.
This chair making includes steam bending of the back. Today they shaped the bent piece, and fitted it to the chair frame. They will upholster their own seat next week and finish the chair.
全員できあがったら、ぜんぶ並べて座り比べをしてみたいですね。写真も載せますのでお楽しみに。
I would like to line up all the chairs once they are done, and compare them by sitting one by one. I will put up some photos here later.
