４日は研ぎ初めでした。
ひととおり鉋の刃を研いでから、刃口が大きく開いていた小鉋の刃口埋めをしました。
鉋の台は伸縮や摩耗によって狂いが生じてくるので、ときどき下端（材料に接する面）を専用の別の鉋で修正してやらないといけません。少し削って、平らにしてあげるわけですね。
それを繰り返すうち、こんどは刃先と台とのすき間、刃口がだんだん広くなってきます。しかし逆目の立たない美しい仕上がりを得るには、この刃口を狭く保っておかないとダメ。1ミリでも広すぎるほどです。
ではどうするか？
刃口の部分に木を埋めて、すき間を狭くしてやります。この作業、すべて手加工で行うので、意外と面倒なのです。
I spent the first working day of the new year for sharpening blades and putting a mouthblock on my small block plane.
The Japanese handplanes require frequent adjustment of the base as the base loses its flatness by abration or the movement of the base itself. You need a special plane for adjusting the base.
But frequent adjustment causes another problem: the mouth of the plane gets wider. Then it requires another adjustment: putting a mouthblock on the base. It is essential to keep the mouth as narrow as possible (1mm is too wide) to achieve a beautiful finish on your work. It is quite an awkward thing to do though because it is all done by hand.
写真は刃口埋めが終ったもの。だいたい0.1ミリぐらいになりました。冒頭の写真、下が今回埋めたもの、上がイギリスにいた頃に埋めたものです。埋める材料は通常、鉋台と同じ樫の木を使うことが多いのですが、イギリスには樫がないので黒檀で埋めました。
A mouthblock is glued to the base. The gap is now 0.1mm.
The top photo shows two handplanes with different mouthblock material. Normally we use evergreen oak, the same material as the base, but I used evony for the one above when I was in Britain since evergreen oak was not available there.

この鉋は刃口を調整するレバーがついていて、すき間の広さを自由に変えられます。荒削り用と仕上げ用、一本でどちらにも使えるわけですね。
日本の道具は使いこなすのにたくさんの知識と技術が要り、道具に人が近づいていく感じがするのですが、西洋のものは誰でも使いやすいように改良が重ねられており、人に道具が近づいてくる感があります。
This Western block plane has an adjusting mechanism of the mouth. You can use one plane for both roughing and smoothing.
Japanese hand tools often require a lot of information and techniques to use properly. On the other hand Western tools have been, and still being refined so that anyone can use easily. I have an impression that you need to get closer to tools in Japan. In contrast tools come closer to you in Western countries.
日本の鉋でも、似たような工夫はあります。
これ、名古屋の鉋屋さんに置いてあったのを見て、同じように誂えてもらったものですが、刃口が広くなったらネジで固定された木を下へ少し押し出すことで、手軽にすき間が埋められるようになっています。
There is a similar device in some Japanese tools, too.
This mouthblock is a sliding dovetail and you just need to slide it down a bit to make the mouth narrower.
