アカデミーのエンジニア科木のコースの１年生たちは、いまスツールづくりに取り組んでいます。
はじめに世界の有名なスツールに関する授業があり、次に自分たちで用途やデザインを考えて図面や模型をつくり、今週からはいよいよ制作にかかります。
今回は丸ホゾのスツール、という課題を設定しています。つまり座の部分にあけた丸い穴に、足がささっている形に限られます。とはいえ、それ以外は自由にデザインが可能なので、どんなスツールが出来上がってくるか、楽しみでもあり、怖くもあり・・・？
The first year students of the undergraduate course are making stools this month.
They were given a lecture on the world's classic stools at the beginning of the lesson. Then each student designed their own stool on a drawing and a scale model. Where and how it is used needs to be considered and presented. This week they start making the real one.
I made a rule on designing the stool: wedged round through tenon structure. Round tenons on the legs go through round holes on the seat and fixed with wedges. They can design all the rest freely.

機械で座を四角に、足を丸棒にしたあと、少しずつカンナで削ってちょっとだけ曲線をつけています。
去年秋にイタリアの有名デザイナー、エンツォ・マーリ氏が岐阜に来たときに講演会に出かけたのですが、マーリ氏が言っていました。「家具を設計するとき、みんな斬新で奇抜なデザイン、いままで見たことのないようなデザインにしたがるものだが、よいデザインはごくあたりまえでシンプルなもののはずだ」。
しかし、シンプルなものにもただ凡庸なものと、すごく美しく感じるものとがあります。その差は、ほんとにごくわずかなんですよね。難しいところです。
そんなことを考えつつ、あえて四角い板と丸棒の単純な構造にして、美しく感じられるスツールになるかどうか少しずつ削ってみています。

I machined the seat and turned the legs roughly on the lathe. Now its various hand planes' turn to put subtle curves on them.
Last autumn Italian famous designer Enzo Mari visited Gifu and gave a lecture to the public. He said that many furniture designers tend to make their work something eccentric, unusual and no one have ever seen, but good design has to be normal and simple.
I was impressed with his words, but simple design often becomes dull. There are some beautiful furniture with simple design, though, and the difference is very subtle.
So this sample-stool making is my challenge. I chose simple square seat and turned legs to find out if there is a beautiful shape in them, by shaving them gradually with handplanes.
