Cormorant fishing basket / 鵜飼いの籠づくり

毎週金曜日は、グリーンウッドワーク協会のメンバー５人で竹細工を学んでいます。
今月から、鵜飼いに使われる「吐け籠」を作り始めました。鵜が捕った鮎を吐かせるための籠です。
冒頭の写真は先生の作。大小あり、入れ子になります。これは小さい方。ただし近年は鮎があまり捕れないため、もう一まわり小さくしてほしいと鵜匠さんから注文があるそうです。

Five members of Green Woodwork Association, including myself, are practising bamboo basketry every Friday.
We started making 'Hake Kago', a basket to keep sweetfish caught by cormorants in the river.
There are two sizes of Hake Kagos. The first photo shows the small one. The cormorant fishermen ask the basket maker to make even smaller size of this basket, as the amount of sweetfish keeps decreasing these days.

竹細工の先生は長良川鵜飼いの道具を一手に引き受けるベテランの職人さんですが、いまは体調を崩されていて、この春からはメンバーの「自主練」です。メンバーの１人が先生のお宅に伺って制作上のポイントを聞き、現物を測って材料をこしらえ、あとは現物を見ながら試行錯誤しています。
それでも、１年間基礎を教えていただいたおかげで、何とか編み方が分かります。
We practise on our own since this spring, as the basket maker, who makes all the baskets for the cormorant fishing in Nagara river, is not well and stays at home. One of us goes to his home and get some advice whenever we make a new item. Then we measure the real item made by the master and have a try.
We learned the basic technique from the master last year, and it helps a great deal.

それぞれの部材を、所定の長さ、幅、厚みにするのに数日。そして丸一日かけて編んでやっと５センチほど。
意識せずに編み続けると、不思議とどんどん先すぼみになります。美しくふくらませながら立ち上げるのが難しいそうです。
I spent a few days to prepare the material, and another whole day for weaving up to 5cm tall. It tends to go narrower as it gets taller.
