グリーンウッドワーク協会メンバーで、長野県木曽郡上松町の「小林へぎ板店」を見学してきました。「へぎ板」って分かりますか？木を縦に、木目に沿って薄く割ることを「へぐ」と言います。へがれた板が「へぎ板」です。
へぎ板専門のお店は全国でもここだけとのこと。ご主人の小林鶴三さんに、さっそくその技を見せていただきました。
材料はヒノキ、サワラ、ネズコ、スギなど、針葉樹を使います。
コダチと呼ぶ刃物を使って木口に８等分の割れ目を入れ、手で一気にへいでいきます。厚みを一定に保てるのが職人技！
We visited Kobayashi Cleft Wood Supply in Agematsu, Nagano.
Kobayashi's cleft wood is the thin strip of wood produced by cleaving the wood along the grain.
It is the only shop in Japan which specializes in cleft wood.
Mr.Tsuruzo Kobayashi showed us his cleaving technique. He uses only softwood such as cypress and ceder. First he splits the end into eight using a hatchet, then cleaves it half by hand. It is his technique that keeps the thickness of the wood even.
へがれた面は、きらきら光っています。
The cleft surface is shining with its gloss.
小林さんのつくるへぎ板は、主に和室の内装に使われます。
工房の隣にある展示室では、美しく網代に編まれた天井やつい立てを見ることができます。
この板へぎ、材料は生木のほうがいいんです。
機械がない時代は、こうやって板をつくっていたんですね。

Kobayashi's cleft wood is mainly used for decorating the interior of Japanese houses. At his showroom by the workshop you can see beautifully woven ceiling and panel screens.
For cleaving, green wood works better than dried wood. People used to make wooden boards by cleaving green wood when machines were not available. It is the traditional green woodwork, and it seems useful to our activity, too.
