岐阜市の漆芸家・登根円さんを講師に迎えての漆塗り講座が終わりました。
５週間にわたって手板に漆を塗り重ね、ずいぶん深い色と艶が出てきました。
写真は、黒漆を塗っては拭き取る（摺り漆、拭き漆などと呼ばれます）工程を５回重ねたもの。
A series of Japanese lacquering lessons by the lacquer artist Madoka Tone finished last week.
Our students applied five coats of lacquer on the sample boards, and acquired deep colour and gloss on it.
The photo below shows five coats of 'wiping lacquer' (black).
下の写真も摺り漆なのですが、よく見ると板に凹凸が・・・。
手板を鉋で仕上げる際にうまく削れなかった部分が、漆を吸い込むとはっきり浮き上がってしまいます。手強い塗料です。
This is another sample board of wiping lacquer. Note the tiny dents on the surface, which was created by hand planing. You wouldn't notice these dents before applying the lacquer, but it raises any faults of the material as it soaks into the grain.
手板に麻布や和紙を貼る技法にも挑戦しました。
米糊と漆を混ぜたものを接着剤として使い、麻布や和紙を貼り、漆で塗り固めます。
その上から黒漆を塗り、最後に弁柄を混ぜた朱漆を塗ります。
The students tried some other techniques with coloured lacquer.
Hemp cloth and Japanese paper were put onto the sample boards by the lacquer itself, which works as glue. The blackened lacquer was applied, followed by the red pigmented lacquer.
The boards were left in a damp box for several days. (Japanese lacquer dries through the chemical reaction with water in the air. So it doesn't dry in the dry atmosphere!)
朱漆が乾いた後に、耐水ペーパーで研ぎだすと、和紙や麻布の模様が浮き出てきます。
Beautiful texture of paper and hemp cloth appears as you sand the surface of the board.
美濃は和紙づくりの里なので、さまざまな模様の美濃和紙を使ってみるのも楽しそうです。
すばらしい日本の伝統技法、現代のものづくりにも生かしたいですね。
Our place Mino is known for Japanese paper making tradition, and various beautiful Japanese paper is available. It is nice to use traditional skill and local material to make modern crafts.

木のお皿に漆やオイルを塗っていただきながら、ご家庭でもできる塗装法を学んでいただく講座です。

There is a short course for the public on 6th and 7th August, which features finishing techniques. Participants will apply natural oil and Japanese lacquer on wooden plates.
