２月２３〜２５日、旭川市工芸センターにお招きいただいてグリーンウッドワークについての講演と実演を行ってきました。集まってくださったのは、旭川工芸デザイン協会のみなさん。旭川のクラフト・家具業界をリードしてきた一流の作り手の方々です。こちらも力が入りました。
I was invited by Asahikawa Craft Centre to give them a lecture on green woodworking. Around twenty members of Asahikawa Craft Design Association attended the lecture. Asahikawa is one of the biggest furniture-industry cities in Japan, and all the members of ACDA are superb craftspeople, who have been leading this furniture city.
伐ったばかりの生木を使い人力の道具でものづくりをするグリーンウッドワークをイギリスで学んできて、これまで少しずつ学校の授業に取り入れたり、学外の仲間と活動したりしてきました。普及のためのグループを作ろうという話になった矢先、初仕事とも言えるお話を木のものづくりの本場からいただいたわけです。
I studied green woodwork in Britain and was fascinated by it. Since then I have been introducing the method of green woodwork to Gifu Academy and other organizations with colleague woodworkers. We were about to setup a group to promote the green woodwork programmes when we received this invitation from the northern capital of crafts.
僕がスライドショーを交えた講演を担当することにして、実演はこれまでたびたびアカデミーにも関わってもらっている加藤慎輔さんにお願いすることにしました。

I prepared some slideshows and asked Shinsuke Kato, my colleague and an experienced green woodworker, for demonstration.
打ち合わせや機材のテストを重ね、１週間前に梱包。何しろ1000キロ以上も離れたところへ行くので車に載せていくわけにもいかず、大変です。運送会社に頼んでそこそこ安く送ることができましたが、道具類を小さくするのがこれからの課題ですね。
We had a few meetings and a rehearsal before packing all the tools and equipments. We had to ship the tools in advance because Asahikawa is more than 700 miles away. It didn't cost a lot but our pole lathe and shaving horse are still too big for this purpose. We need to make them more compact for traveling.
プロの方々に見せるため、スライドショーは１００枚以上用意しました。イギリスのグリーンウッドワークの椅子づくりの様子と、森林文化アカデミーのグリーンウッドワークを取り入れたものづくり講座で構成しました。・・・しかし準備する時間が足りず、何度も徹夜。出発直前になんとかまとめることができたものの、頭もうろう、体ふらふら。
More than 100 slides were prepared, mainly the photos of chair making course in Britain and craft making course at Gifu Academy. But there wasn't enough time to edit the slideshow and I ended up getting on board the plane to Asahikawa after an overnight work!
