きのう、ものづくりの学生全員と木のコースの学生を連れて、岐阜県可児市にある「ヤイリギター」を見学してきました。
ギターを弾く方ならご存知だと思いますが、ヤイリはポール・マッカートニーはじめ世界中のミュージシャンに愛用されるギターメーカーです。そんな世界一流の工房が学校から１時間足らずの距離にあり、見学させてもらえるというのは本当に幸せなことです。
I took postgraduate students and an undergraduate to K.Yairi's guitar workshop (English site) in Kani, Gifu.
If you are a guitar player, you must have heard of 'K.Yairi'. It is one of the best guitar manufacturers with Paul McCartney and world's leading musicians on their client list. We are so lucky to be here in Mino, within an hours drive to such a great workshop.
僕は工房を見学させていただくのが好きです。加工のための補助具（治具）の作り方や機械の置き方、道具の整頓の仕方に至るまで、どんな工房にも必 ず、なるほど！すごい！と思える工夫があります。職人さんたちが働く張りつめた空気に触れるだけでも、得られるものがあると感じます。
I love visiting other workshops, because you will find different ideas and devices at any places. Their jigs, layout of machines, the way they organize tools... even the atmosphere in the workshop inspires me.
ヤイリギターには３０人ほどの職人さんたちが働いています。ギター工房を訪れるのは初めてでしたが、ここはまさに手づくり。こんなところまで手加工でやっているのか、と思ったところがいくつもありました。
ギターのネックを小刀で削る職人さんは、脇に柄がピカピカの工具類を並べていました。聞けば、小さすぎてギターには使えないハカランダ（ブラジリアン・ローズウッド）の端材で自分で作り、塗装までしたのだそうです。こんな遊び心を持った職人さんに出会えるのが嬉しいです。
（注：このハカランダはワシントン条約発効前に伐採されたものだそうです）
There are about thirty makers in K.Yairi workshop, and their guitars are really hand-crafted.
I found some knives and spokeshaves with glossy handles by a maker who was shaping the neck of guitar. He made those tool handles from some offcuts of Brazilian rosewood, and he even applied a finish on them. Nice to see a craftsman with such a playful mind!
(Their Brazilian rosewood stock was felled before the Washington Treaty was activated.)
ベテランの方もいらっしゃいますが、若い人もずいぶんいました。全国からギター好き、音楽好きの若者が集まってくるのだそうです。必ずしも木工の技術を学んできた人ばかりではありません。まず自分の持ち場の仕事を先輩から学び、また終業のあとに自分用のギターを作りながら、楽器作りの初めから終わりまでを学んでいくのだそうです。
There are many young makers in the workshop as well as some veterans. Young guitar lovers come to K.Yairi from all over Japan and ask for a job so they don't need to advertise. Many of them have no experience of woodworking before. They learn by working with senior makers, and by himself while making his own guitar after working hours.
できあがったギターが出荷を待つのは、クラシックが大音量で鳴り響く部屋。ギターを音楽に慣れさせるためとのことでした。本当かなと思いながら部屋に入れてもらい、ギターの表面に触れてみて納得。音楽の響きを受けて、ギターが震えているのです。生きているみたいに。
K.Yairi stores finished guitars in the 'maturing room' for weeks before the shipping where the stereo sets playing classical music in the loud volume. I touched the top board of a finished guitar and felt the top board actually echoing to the music!

見学の最後に、社長の矢入一男さんが声をかけてこられました。ギターのことをもっと知ってもらいたいから、また友達を連れていつでもおいで、と。ここには毎日のように見学者が訪れているはずなのに、嫌な顔ひとつせず、楽しく見学を終えてもらえるように心を配る。そんな社長さんの精神が伝わっているのか、仕事中の職人さんたちも僕たちの質問にとても丁寧に答えてくださいました。
ヤイリさんの製品に「一五一会」という楽器がありますが、まさに一期一会のこころを感じた工房見学でした。
矢入一男さん、案内をしてくださった矢入賀光さん、職人のみなさん、ありがとうございました。
At the end of the tour Mr. Kazuo Yairi, the director of the company, came in to speak with us. He told us with a friendly smile, 'Bring in your friends. We want many people to know about guitars.' I am impressed by his hospitality. They welcome many visitors almost daily, and still they are so thoughtful about each of them. All the workers seem to share his spirit because every worker answers to our question in a polite manner.
K.Yairi produces their original instrument called 'Ichigo-Ichie'. It is named after a Japanese proverb "Tresure every encounter, for it will never recur". The company's spirit is well explained.
