旭川工芸デザイン協会のみなさんへのグリーンウッドワークのスライドと実演は、とても好評でした。
The slideshow and the demonstration of green woodwork to the members of Asahikawa Craft Design Association was very successful.
家具やクラフトづくりのプロの方が相手なので、スライドでは技術的な説明をたくさん用意しました。「ほんとうに生の木が使えるのか」「接合部分が緩んでしまわないのか」・・・質問もたくさんいただきました。
意外に聞こえるかもしれませんが、木のものづくりをする人にとって、生木を使う機会はまったくと言っていいほどないのです。僕自身もそうでした。材料はじゅうぶん乾燥させたものを業者から購入する、それが常識です。
だからその辺の生の木を伐って削って、すぐに椅子の脚にするなど、プロであればあるほど思いもよらないわけですね。
グリーンウッドワークでは生の木の特性を逆に生かしていて、乾けば乾くほど接合部分が締まり、椅子が強くなります。一見原始的だけど、実はとても科学的なのです。
We included lots of technical information in the slideshow as the audience were professional craftspeople. We received lots of questions from them, too: "Is green wood really usable for furniture making?" "Does the joint come loose as it dries?"...
It might sound strange, but many professional woodworkers have no experience of green wood. There is a common belief: only dried timber should be used for furniture making.
So they have never thought of chair legs made out of freshly felled tree.
Actually green woodwork techniques are based on scientific knowledge on wood. It even takes advantage of the drawback of green wood: shrinkage of wood strengthens the joints. It looks primitive, but isn't.
実演は百戦錬磨の加藤慎輔さんの担当。造園会社で庭師の経験もある彼は、生木の知識も豊富です。
今回はカバとヒノキを用意して、広葉樹と針葉樹の削り心地を味わってもらいました。グリーンウッドワークに初めて触れる人はみんなそうですが、生木が柔らかくてサクサク削れることにびっくり、電気をまったく使わなくてもツルツルの丸い棒が作れることに感激、という感じでした。

Shinsuke Kato gave a demonstation to the audience. He is a professional green woodworker as well as a gardener, so he knows a lot about green wood.
We prepared logs of birch and cypress so that the audience can experience the feel of both, hardwood and softwood. Every people who try green woodworking for the first time has the same unexpected impression: wood is so soft and easy to work! They were also surprised to achieve smooth turned surface by the lathe with no electricity. You can see it from their smiles on the photo.
モノを作って売るだけではなく、何か新しいアプローチを探したい、ということで今回旭川に招いていただいたのですが、このグリーンウッドワーク、参加したみなさんにとても魅力的に写ったようです。
For ACDA, the purpose of this green wood workshop was to seek some new approaches to their clients. Green woodwork seemed to have appealed to them.
