ものづくり研究会の教官３人と学生５人が、沖縄県竹富町と石垣市を訪ねてきました。
今回の目的は、沖縄・八重山地方の「木の文化」を学ぶこと。民具や伝統工芸、さまざまな樹種について見学したり、聞き取りしたりしてきました。その研修をもとに、竹富島の特産品開発を想定して、木のクラフト小物を各自が制作することにしています。
Three tutors and five students of the Craft and Furniture Making Dept. visited Taketomi and Ishigaki islands of Okinawa prefecture, the southern part of Japan.
The purpose of this visit was to learn their woodland culture. We studied their indigenous crafts, traditional skills of craft making, and their native species of trees. Each tutor and student then produce a modern craft for them based on this study trip.
竹富島は人口３００人あまりの小さな島ですが、赤瓦の民家が並ぶ沖縄の伝統的な風景が残ることで知られています。
まずは島の民具を保存している、貴宝院蒐集館へ。館長の上勢頭芳徳さんに解説していただきました。
ものづくり研究会では、飛騨の民具をもとにいまの生活に役立つものづくりを行うなど、古くから私たちが使ってきた道具について学ぶことを大切にしています。
Taketomi is a tiny island with its population of over three hundred. But the island is best known for its well-conserved traditional landscape and buildings.
We first went to 'Kihoin-Shushukan', Taketomi Folk Museum. Mr.Yoshinori Uesedo, the director of the museum, guided us around.
We regard it important to study indigenous crafts, and renovate them into modern ones. In our region we often take students to Hida area for that purpose. Okinawa has a totally different culture from ours.
こんな小さな島にも、戦前は細工師（木工職人）が２人いて、箱や桶など生活の道具を作っていたのだそうです。それらの箱が蒐集館にありますが、木と木の組み方が繊細で上品なことに感心しました。材料も黒檀など、南の島独特のものです。
There used to be two woodworkers in this tiny island before the second World War, who made daily-use crafts such as boxes and buckets. Some of their works were in the museum, and I was impressed by its delicate joints and elegant shape. The material is typical tropical tree such as ebony.
