人力ろくろでコマづくり/ turning a top on the pole lathe

ただいま開催中のものづくり研究会・奈良展では、われわれ教官３人と卒業生の１人が一般向けのものづくり講座も実施します。
僕は５月５日「こどもの日スペシャル」として、人力ろくろを使ったコマづくりをやる予定です。
Tutors and a graduate of Craft and Furniture Dept. are going to run craft workshops at our annual exhibition in Nara.
I am to run a top turning workshop using a pole lathe on Children's day, the fifth of May.

やります！と宣言して広報に載せたものの、実はコマづくりは初めて。子どもがすべて人力で丸太からコマをつくるなんて、うまくいくのかどうか・・・。
そこでアカデミーの学生の息子さんで近くの小学校に通うコウイチ君に実験台になってもらって、今週は道具の改良やコマの試作をしていました。
The schedule of the workshops is already announced, but actually I have no experience of turning a top on the pole lathe. I spent a whole week to experiment a top turning with my advisor Koichi Yamamura, a son of a student at the Forest Academy.

コウイチ少年のアドバイスに従って（彼の指摘の的確さは大人顔負け）、踏みやすいように踏み板のサイズを変えたり、コマづくり専用の金具を取り付けたり、いろいろ工夫してみました。
I modified the pole lathe according to Koichi's advice. His advices were so appropriate and helpful for me. I changed the size of pedal and attached bearings to hold the shaft.



試作してもらったら大成功！
回しながら色を付けたりして楽しめます。
当日は限定１０人の予約制です。どんなコマができるか、また結果を報告するのでお楽しみに。お近くの方は、ぜひ見に来てください！
Koichi then made a sample and it proved the modification was successful. He enjoyed putting some colour on the top as well as turning it on the lathe.

ものづくり研究会 奈良展/ Annual Exhibition in Nara

ものづくり研究会では、毎年各地で展示会を行っています。今年はゴールデンウイークに、奈良市の中心部にある「奈良町物語館」で開催します。
ものづくりの新２年生がこの１年間の成果をまとめた作品を出品するほか、松井・山口・久津輪の教官３人、非常勤講師の先生方や卒業生も出品します。
The annual exhibition of the Craft and Furniture Making Dept. takes place in the Japanese ancient capital of Nara, from 28th April until 6th May.

The second-year students will exhibit their achievements in the first year. Three full-time tutors, Tokinari Matsui, Hiroshi Yamaguchi and I will exhibit our pieces as well as some part-time tutors. Some graduates will have their latest works, too.

今年の展示会の目玉は、日本を代表する宮大工、小川三夫さん（鵤工舎主宰）をお招きしての「ものづくり夜咄」。４月３０日夕方６時からです（要予約）。
また、教官と卒業生による出前講座もたくさん予定されています。（僕も５月５日にこどもの日スペシャルをやります！）
古都を散歩がてら、作品を見て、作って、楽しんでいきませんか？お待ちしています。

There is an evening talk by the Japanese leading shrine builder Mitsuo Ogawa at 6pm, 30th April. Various craft making workshops by the tutors and the graduates will be held at the venue.

生木に触れる/ introduction of green woodwork

１年生向け授業の第２弾は、生木を使った木工です。
これまで各地で実施して好評だった「すりこぎとすり鉢づくり」のプログラムを、授業にも取り入れました。

電動の旋盤ですり鉢を、人力の旋盤ですりこぎを作り、スパイスをすってスパイスティーを飲む、というものです。
どちらも、生木を使って作ります。


木工を学ぶ学校には職業訓練校や芸術大学などがありますが、伐ったばかりの生木を使う学校は、アカデミー以外にほとんどないはず。反りや縮みを防ぐため、家具づくりには、じゅうぶん乾燥させた材を用いる、というのが定説だからです。

ですが、生木に触れることのメリットは実にたくさんあります。

生の木は加工するとどんどん乾き、縮んでくるので、木がどう動くのか、直感的に理解できます。
人力の道具を使うのも、それぞれの材の固さやきめの細かさなど、木の個性を体で感じるのに役立ちます。
生の木が縮む特性を逆に利用して、乾けば乾くほど締まり、丈夫になる椅子をつくることもできるのです。


そんな難しい理屈もありますが、いちばんのメリットはやってて楽しい、ということでしょうね。作り手が楽しんでいれば、できたものを使う人だってきっと楽しくなるはず。
昼休みには、ほかの研究会の学生たちも人力の道具に群がって、かわるがわる生木を削って遊んでいました。
屋外でやる木工っていいなぁ。気持ちよかったです。


１日の終わりには８人それぞれにすりこぎとすり鉢を完成させ、みんなでおいしいスパイスティーをいただきました♪

新入生/ freshers

いよいよ新入生が入ってきました！
今年はなんと８人！
少ないと思うかもしれませんが、個人指導を特徴としてきたものづくり研究会では、今まで１学年５人が最大でした。アカデミー全体でも、５つの研究会（大卒レベル）あわせて毎年２０人ずつ。今年はそのうち半数近くがものづくりです。
We welcomed eight freshers this April. Not many? We have never had such many students as the college is desiged for one-to-one tuition. Five departments share twenty postgraduate students every year, but nearly half have chosen Craft and Furniture Making Dept. this year.

２０代２人、３０代４人、そして６０代が２人。経歴もさまざまで、個性的な人たちばかり。こりゃ楽しくなりそうだ、と思いました。
Two twenties, four thirties and two sixties, with all different backgrounds and unique characters. It will be fun to work with them.

一方、思わぬところでこりゃ大変だ、と感じたことも。
１年生向けのガイダンスの時間。僕は長い会議が嫌いなのでゼミの時などはコーヒーをいれるのですが、教官含めて１１人ではもうドリッパーじゃ間に合わない！コーヒー豆もあっという間になくなった！中古のコーヒーメーカーをお持ちの方、寄付をお願いします！ついでにおいしいコーヒー豆も歓迎です。
We are already facing some small troubles, too. I normally drink coffee during the meeting (I hate long meetings). But our small coffee dripper is no longer useful to serve more than ten cups of coffee. Coffee beans had gone so quickly. We welcome any kind donation of second-hand coffee maker, tasty coffee beans...


最初の実習は、同僚・山口の木工旋盤（木工ろくろ）を使ったペンづくりでした。初心者でも簡単にできるので、ものづくりの楽しさを味わってもらうには最適です。
２〜３人の学生なら実習の準備は１５分ほどで終わるのですが、８人分を準備するのになんと２時間。
実習中も１つ１つの工程ごとに行列ができたりします。そして慣れない８人が同時に削り始めると、見て回るのに大わらわ。
通常、制作系の実習は山口と僕が交互に担当することが多いのですが、当面は２人体制だね、と話しています。

The first lesson for the freshers is wooden-pen making using electric lathes. It is a best item to learn for them as it is easy enough to make.
My colleague Hiroshi Yamaguchi normally spends fifteen minutes to setup the lathes for two or three students. This time he took two hours!
Every process causes a queue in front of each machine.
Once they start turning at the same time, Hiroshi was then so busy to look after each one, just like juggling eight knives!
Hiroshi and I will have to help each others' lectures for some time (juggling four knives each would be easier).

卒業生、始動！/brand-new start of graduates

きょうから新年度。桜が咲き、黄砂が舞い、春本番を感じさせる１日になりました。
２年間ものづくりを学んできた学生達が、この日から一斉に新天地での活動をスタートさせました。
Today is the start of new school year. Cherry blossoms are blooming, yellow sand from the continent is falling (as a result of seasonal wind, only in April), we are at the height of spring right now. The graduates from the Forest Academy has just started their new life in the new places.

ものづくり研究会の新川和枝さん、久野晴代さん、木のコースの長岡かやさんの３人は岐阜市の「アクティブG」で、木の雑貨を販売し、ものづくり講座を行う店「Arb」を開業しました。Arbとはフランス語の「木」という言葉にちなんだ名前。木の額縁や小さな木の家具、木のスプーンなどがお店に並びます。また木のおもちゃや生活雑貨を作る一般向けの講座を通して、木という素材の魅力を伝えていこうとしています。
Kazue Shinkawa, Haruyo Kuno and Kaya Nagaoka has just opened their craft shop called 'Arb' at 'Active G' in Gifu. The shop is named after a French word for tree: Arbre. They displays their recent works such as picture frames, wooden spoons and some small furniture. They are to run some craft making courses for the public to tell the charm of wood.


このアクティブG、JR岐阜駅の３階にあるのですが、駅ビルとは思えないとてもユニークな空間です。木工のほか陶芸、金工、ガラス、漆などなど、いろんなジャンルの工房が並んで現代の工芸村のよう。一般向けの講座も充実していて、ものづくりの魅力を体験できます。
まだ一度も足を運んだことのない人にはぜひお勧めしたいスポットです。Arbの３人も冒頭の写真の笑顔で迎えてくれますよ（くれるかな？くれるよね）。
Active G is a unique complex of craft galleries and workshops at the third floor of Gifu station building. It is like a modern alternative of craft village with woodworkers, potters, metalsmiths, glassworkers and a Japanese lacquerer as tenants. They provide local people with various short courses as well as their products, so craft lovers can't miss this place. Don't miss visiting the Arb, too!

ものづくり研究会で旋盤（ろくろ）の技術を中心に学んだ桑村恭彦君は、大分県由布院の「アトリエとき」へ就職が決まり、きょう旅立って行きました。
Yasuhiko Kuwamura, another graduate from Forest Academy has left for Oita on the same day to work at the wood turning workshop 'Atelier Toki'.

「アトリエとき」を主宰する時松辰夫さんは木工ろくろの専門家で、由布院で美しい木の器を作るほか、全国各地でろくろの技術指導をしておられます。
時松さんには１１月にアカデミーで講演をお願いしたのですが、大量の木の器を持って来てくださり、ものづくりを通して地域を活性化させたいという思いを熱く語っていただきました。
Atelier Toki is run by the renowned craft designer/maker Tatsuo Tokimatsu. He produces beautiful wooden bowls and plates at his atelier in the famous hotspring resort Yufuin. He also teaches his woodturning skills at many local villages all over Japan.
Mr. Tokimatsu visited Forest Academy last November to give us a lecture on his thirty years of activities to promote the economy of rural villages. He brought loads of wooden bowls with him, and his passionate speech attracted many students.

このときの講演が縁で、桑村君を受け入れていただくことになりました。アトリエときでの修行を経て、木の器づくりの名手となることを期待したいです。
The good relationship between Mr. Tokimatsu and Forest Academy led to the employment of our graduate Yasuhiko Kuwamura. He will be working there for several years to master Mr. Tokimatsu's woodturning technique.

春、新スタート、いいですね。みんながんばれ！
