We invite various guest lecturers to the Academy from different fields. This month Mr. Naritoshi Hoki, a paper maker from our local town Mino, gave some lectures to the students.
Mino is the most famous town in Japan for paper making. Mr. Hoki is one of the few young generation makers. He grows his own Kozo, the material, as well as making paper.
The demand for Japanese traditional paper keeps declining as a result of industrialization and the increase of cheap imported products.
He is trying to keep the Japanese paper making tradition by raising its quality much higher than any other products on the market. Mr. Hoki's paper has incredibly delicate texture and beautifully hand crafted detail.
Japanese furniture makers and house builders share the same problem with those paper makers. Modern houses, furniture and fittings are all poorly made, and good skills are getting lost.
It is important for us to work together in order to change the direction of where we are heading.
アカデミーではさまざまな分野から講師をお招きしていますが、６月は２週にわたって地元・美濃の和紙職人、保木成敏さんにお越しいただき、和紙づくりについてのお話を伺いました。
保木さんは数少ない若手和紙職人の一人で、原料のこうぞから畑で栽培し、自ら和紙にまで仕上げます。
和紙の世界も経営はたいへん厳しく、特に工場で量産される「和紙もどき」の製品や、タイなど海外からの安い製品に押され、需要は減り続けています。
それでも日本伝統の紙づくりの技術を残したいと、圧倒的に品質の高い和紙づくりで差別化を図り、道を開こうとしておられます。今回お持ちいただいた保木さんの作品は信じられないほど繊細な表情を持つものばかりで、比べてみると質の違いが分かります。
工業化による安い量産品に押され、日本人が長年かかって築き上げて来た技術が失われつつあるのは、家具づくりにも、家づくりにも共通の問題です。住まいは粗悪になり、家具や建具も粗悪なものになりました。
現状を打開するにはこうした異分野の人々と協力して、よりよいものづくりをすること、それを社会に拡げて行くことが大切だと思いました。
