岩手県葛巻町の「森と風のがっこう」で、１泊２日のグリーンウッドワーク講座を実施してきました。大好評でした！
以下、詳しくお伝えしましょう。
I went to Morikaze(Forest and Wind) Nature School on 19-20th May to run a two-days green woodwork course, and had a successful result.
「森と風のがっこう」は、標高７００メートル、１２世帯が暮らす集落にある廃校を利用したエコスクールです。葛巻町自体も風力発電などで町内のエネルギーの８割を自給する町として有名ですが、この「森と風のがっこう」も環境にやさしい暮らしを追求し、さまざまな活動を展開しています。僕たちグリーンウッドワークの考え方とも共通するところが多く、今回講師としてお招きいただくことになったのです。
Morikaze locates in a small community with 12 families in Kuzumaki, Iwate prefecture, 700 meters above the sea level. An old school building was renovated for their office, activity spaces and a cafe. Kuzumaki is a famous town for its energy self-sufficiency with wind power generation. Morikaze is also keen to pursue ecological way of living, and offers various programmes to the public. Their ideas go along well with our green woodwork activity, so I was invited from them as a lecturer.
参加者は９人。遠くは愛媛県から（！）この講座のために来てくれました。
用意した３台の足踏み旋盤と削り馬（シェービングホース）を設置してみると、「森風」の敷地になんともよく似合うのです。スタッフの方にも好評で、「いずれぜひ欲しい！」とのこと。
Nine participants came from all over Japan, the farthest from Ehime, 1500 kilometers away!
Our pole lathes and shaving horses suited Morikaze building very well. Morikaze staffs loved them.
今回のお題は「スプーン」です。
まず、同僚・松井のスプーンコレクションを並べ、見た目や握り心地で好きなスプーンを選んでもらいました。有名なデザイナー物あり、１００円均一のものあり。これがいちばん、と選んだスプーンが１００均のだと知らされて一同大笑い、という場面もありました。
We made spoons using green wood and pole lathes.
The course started with everyone choosing one spoon out of my colleague Matsui's spoon collection. The collection includes several famous designers' work, and also a pound shop (a dollar shop) products. One participant chose her best spoon with confidence, and everyone laughed after she was told the spoon was the pound shop product.
スプーンづくりに使った材料は、シラカバ、ヤマザクラ、ホオ、エンジュの４種類。いずれも地元で用意していただいた小径木です。
We used white birch, cherry, magnolia and Japanese pagoda tree, all thinned from local forest.
今回は足踏み旋盤（ろくろ）を使ってスプーンを作りました。スプーンを２つ合わせたような形にろくろで挽き、斧で半分に割るという方法です。
途中、雨に降られて室内に会場を移しましたが、生の木を削り、旋盤で挽く感触を、みんな楽しんでいたようです。昔はこうやってものづくりをしていたんだな、と感心したり、人力でみるみる木が削れていくことに驚いたり。
全員が旋盤で挽き終えて、１日目の作業を終えました。つづく！
The method of making spoons is to turn the outer surface with pole lathe, then split it into halves with an axe.
Heavy rain started in the middle of the course and we had to move all the equipments inside. They enjoyed shaving and turning green wood. Some thought about old days of craft making, some were surprised to have turned a piece of wood without any electricity.
All the participants turned the outside of the spoon on the first day. To be continued.
