道具を揃える/ buying handtools

毎年この時期になると、新潟から平出さんがやってきます。
平出さんは刃物の産地・三条の道具屋さん。大きなワゴン車に道具を満載して全国各地を回る、木工家の間では有名人です。
Mr.Hiraide visits our college at this time of the year.
He comes from Sanjo, Niigata, a production centre of knives and blades. He is a famous tool shop owner who travels around Japan with his van full of hand tools.

ものづくりの新入生たちは、数万円分の道具を揃えます。鉋（かんな）を数本、鑿（のみ）を数本、砥石、定規類・・・これでも最低限必要なものだけで、ここから少しずつ買い足していきます。
The freshers buy hundreds of dollars of hand tools at this time. A couple of hand planes, chisels, sharpening stones, scales...these are the tools they must have at the beginning. They build their own collection of tools from here.

平出さん、話し始めると止まりません。
大阪・造幣局の桜のくぐり抜けをしようと立ち寄ったら長蛇の列だったのでやめたとか、テレビで滋賀の大工さんを観てその足で仕事場を訪ねて道具を買ってもらったとか。商売だけでなく、職人と話をするのが好き、観光も好き。いつも楽しそうに仕事をしておられます。

Mr. Hiraide doesn't stop talking while selling his tools.
He talked about a short stop in Osaka to see cherry blossoms, a visit to a carpenter in Shiga whom he saw on TV just the day before. He loves chatting, traveling as well as his business.

プロジェクトとインターンシップ/ 'project' and 'internship'

この六角形のスツール、ものづくり研究会の２年生・横井敦史君がデザイン、制作し、JR岐阜駅内のカルチャースクールへ納めたものです。森林文化アカデミーでは、こうして実社会からの依頼を受けてクラフトや家具をデザインしたり、制作する実習があります。「プロジェクト」と呼んでいます。
カルチャースクール「TAKUMIアカデミー」から、スツールを新調したいとご相談をいただいたのは去年の暮れ。学生に呼びかけたところ横井君が名乗り出て、プロジェクトとして実施することになりました。写真は２種類の試作品を持参して、TAKUMIアカデミーのスタッフと打ち合わせをしているところです。
Atsushi Yokoi, a student at the Craft and Furniture Department designed and made those stools for an adult education centre in Gifu. We often take such 'real' commissions from public and private clients. We call it 'projects'.
The Takumi Academy , the adult education centre, contacted us last winter to discuss about their renewal of stools. Atsushi applied to the project and submitted a couple of new stool designs. The photo shows his presentation to Takumi Academy staffs with two prototypes of the stool.

デザインのコンセプトは、岐阜の山で採れた小径の間伐材を生かすこと。
幅の狭い部材を組み合わせているのはそのためです。材も５種類を使っています。
The concept of the stool is to make the most of small diameter logs in local forest.
The hexagonal seat is made of small pieces of five different species.

制作は、飛騨の家具会社であり教育機関でもある「森林たくみ塾」で行いました。横井君が自らたくみ塾へ行き、スタッフの指導を受けながら制作しました。
森林文化アカデミーでは、こうして民間の工房や会社での体験就業を実習として行っています。「インターンシップ」と呼んでいます。
Atsushi then went to the Shinrin-Takumijuku, a furniture workshop cum educational institution in Hida. We encourage students to go out of the college and have work experience as an intern.


１ヶ月かけて制作、納品したのは２５脚。さっそくTAKUMIアカデミーの教室で使われ、大好評でした。いままでの合板の椅子に比べ、無垢の座面はやわらかく、座り心地がいいのです。
いわば産学協同プロジェクト。これからもいいものを生み出して行こうと思います。
Atsushi spent a month in Hida and finished 25 stools. They were delivered to the Takumi Academy early this month. They were very well received among the staffs and students there. The solid wood seat is soft and comfortable compared to the former plywood stools.
We want to produce good crafts and furniture through such industry-university cooperation projects.

新年度恒例、すりこぎすりばち/turning mortar and pestle

森林文化アカデミー・ものづくり研究会に入ってきた６人の新入生たち。
今週はさっそく木工旋盤（ろくろ）の実習で、すりこぎとすりばちを作りました。
これは新年度の恒例プログラム。まずは楽しむことからものづくりを始めてほしい、というアカデミーならではの実習です。
We welcomed six freshers to the Craft and Furnirure Making Dept. this year.
We start our lesson by wood turning. Wood turning is easy and fun, so it gives a good impression on woodwork to the freshers.

アカデミーならではといえば、このグリーンウッドワークもそうですね。
斧（おの）や銑（せん）を使い、生の木を人力だけで削ります。木工を学ぶ教育機関で、こうして生の木を削るところはおそらく他にないでしょう。
The first lesson includes green woodwork. Shaving on the horse and turning on the pole lathe. We are probably the only woodworking college in Japan that teaches green woodwork like this.

できあがったすりこぎとすりばち。
これでさっそくスパイスをすりました。
Each student made a mortar by electric lathe and a pestle by pole lathe.

シナモン、クローブ、カルダモン、ジンジャー、そしてミルクをたっぷり入れたインドのチャイを飲みながら、１年生と２年生の交流会。今年は教員３人を入れてぜんぶで１７人！賑やかになりそうです。
At the end of the lesson we ground spices with those mortars and pestles to make Chai, the Indian spice tea.
All the member of the Craft and Furniture Making Dept. enjoyed chai while introducing each other.

グリーンウッドワーク協会、法人登記/ JGWA registered as charity organization

生木の木工を愛する人や、森林文化アカデミーの卒業生や在学生たちでつくる「NPO法人グリーンウッドワーク協会」が、産声をあげました。
きょうは法人登記の日。エイプリルフールだけど本当です。
グリーンウッドワークを愛する人たちの様々な活動の母体になってくれればと思います。

Japan Green Woodwork Association has been registered as a charity organization today. I hope it will become a base for lots of interesting activities by the fans of green woodwork.
