The first-year students learned how to use overhead router machine and hand-held router in September.
Each student designs a clock and makes it. To make a clock, students are requested to use router in three different way: routing out a hollow for the movement, making a keyhole for the hook, shaping the edge of the clock. Each student prepares their own jigs.
I recently heard that a woodworking college in Japan had stopped teaching how to use routers because of safety reasons. Health and safety regulations are always getting tighter but I still think we should teach how to use this versatile tool safely.
１年生は９月に「ルーター」の使い方を習います。ルーターは手持ち式の電動工具と据え置き型の機械があり、どちらもいろいろな用途に使えます。この授業では、学生１人１人が時計をデザインし制作します。制作にあたっては、ルーターを３種類の使い方で用いるよう求められます。まず時計のムーブメント用の窪みをつくること。吊り金具のための穴を開けること。外周を成形することです。
ある木工系の学校では安全上の理由からルーターを教えるのをやめたそうですが、とても汎用性のある道具なので教えた方がいいと思っています。
