日曜日に、隣の関市へ「削ろう会」の見学に行ってきました。
メンバーはものづくり研究会の学生と、グリーンウッドワーク協会の会員。スウェーデンのカールマルムステン工芸学校の学生ハンヌ君も、日本各地での研修を終えて合流しました。
We went to 'Kezurokai' Festival in Seki on Sunday. Students of Craft and Furniture Making Dept., some members of Green Woodwork Association, and Hannu from Carl Malmsten School attended.
この削ろう会、鉋で薄く美しく削る技術を競うイベントで、今年で２０回を数えます。日本はもとよりアメリカやドイツにも支部があり、今回もアメリカから「鉋」Tシャツを着た団体客が！木工の国際交流、盛んです。
'Kezurokai' is the event of handplaning enthusiasts' group which compete making thin and beautiful shavings. This year is the 20th anniversary. This group now has branches in America and Germany. At the venue we saw a group of American visitors with 'Kanna(handplane)' T-shirts on.
「削り華」の薄さは３ミクロン。The thickness of the shaving is only 3 micrometer.
ハンヌ君も薄削りに挑戦しました。

僕も長野・上松技術専門校の上条先生の大鉋をお借りして挑戦。
こんな大鉋を使うのは初めてながら、薄い削り華が途切れず出てきます。
台の仕込みと研ぎが重要、ということですね。
I tried Mr. Kamijo's big handplane who teaches at Agematsu vocational college.
Beginners like me can make quite thin shaving means that the sharpening and the adjustment of the base is the most important.
さて、カールマルムステン工芸学校のハンヌ君には、このあと自宅でスウェーデンの木工事情についてスライドショーをしてもらいました。
彼の１０週間の日本研修の一部をお手伝いすることになり、学ぶことも多かったです。
いちばんの驚きは、北欧では有名デザイナーのデザインした家具ばかりがもてはやされ、個人の作家がつくる家具の需要がほとんどないという話。家具作家の展覧会など、めったにないのだとか。
彼はその現状を打破すべく、来年９月にストックホルムで若手作家のグループ展を企画しているそうです。
日本でのさまざまな人との出会いも刺激になっているといいなあ。彼とは来年、スウェーデンで再会しようと思っています。
After this event we watched a slideshow of Carl Malmsten School presented by Hannu.
I helped a part of his ten weeks of work experience in Japan, and I myself learned a lot from him.
What surprised me the most is that Scandinavian people tend to buy modern classic furniture designed by famous designers and there is very little market for furniture designer/makers. Furniture exhibitions by solo makers are very rare.
He is trying to change the situation by planning a group exhibition of young makers next September in Stockholm.
I hope he received a lot of inspiration from the people he met in Japan during this ten weeks.
