The third project for the first year students is this tray, which I designed for the project.
First I thought of Japanese style simple tray but I put handles and made it rather Western style, for the students to learn how to use a router.

Students make a plywood template first. Then place a material on it and cut it according to the template. It is one of the purposes of this project to learn how to make the plywood template, or the 'router jig'.

Each student routed out their original shape.

Mr.Hiraide visits our college at this time of the year.
He comes from Sanjo, Niigata, a production centre of knives and blades. He is a famous tool shop owner who travels around Japan with his van full of hand tools.

The freshers buy hundreds of dollars of hand tools at this time. A couple of hand planes, chisels, sharpening stones, scales...these are the tools they must have at the beginning. They build their own collection of tools from here.

Mr. Hiraide doesn't stop talking while selling his tools.
He talked about a short stop in Osaka to see cherry blossoms, a visit to a carpenter in Shiga whom he saw on TV just the day before. He loves chatting, traveling as well as his business.

We welcomed six freshers to the Craft and Furnirure Making Dept. this year.
We start our lesson by wood turning. Wood turning is easy and fun, so it gives a good impression on woodwork to the freshers.

The first lesson includes green woodwork. Shaving on the horse and turning on the pole lathe. We are probably the only woodworking college in Japan that teaches green woodwork like this.

Each student made a mortar by electric lathe and a pestle by pole lathe.

At the end of the lesson we ground spices with those mortars and pestles to make Chai, the Indian spice tea.
All the member of the Craft and Furniture Making Dept. enjoyed chai while introducing each other.

The Karakuri Master

We have a series of interesting lessons at this time of the year.
Students request what they want to learn in addition to what we provide here in the Forest Academy. We invite professional craftspeople as lecturers for the special lesson. This year one of our students wants to learn how to make Karakuri Ningyo, the Japanese automata. We invited Mr. Shobei Tamaya, the Karakuri Ningyo maker and performer in Nagoya.

Tamada is one of the most known Karakuri Ningyo makers in Japan. He is the ninth Shobei Tamada. He has performed and lectured worldwide, including British Museum and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He first showed us one of his works. Yumihiki-Doji or the Arrow Shooting Boy was originally made during Edo era and Tamada reproduced it.

The doll picks up an arrow, aims at a target, shoot the arrow, and picks up the next, all driven by a spring.

The Japanese automata makers make all the pieces by themselves, from the internal mechanism to the face carving, even doll's clothes.
Students learned how to carve the face. Fine grained Japanese cypress is the material. It uses the same technique as the Japanese Noh play mask making, so that it shows delightful face when looking up, and sad face when looking down.

It took two days for the studens to roughly carve the face, with a lot of help from Mr. Tamaya.

Tutors and students of three departments of the Forest Academy went to the hardwood forest in neighbouring Gujo city in order to thin and measure the amount of annual growth of the forest.
There are many colleges teaching woodwork in Japan, but we are probably the only one whose students go into the forest and do the thinning. We believe this is the great advantage to study at the Forest Academy.

Why the students of furniture making department get involved in forestry management?
It is something to do with the hardwood timber supply in Japan. Now the Japanese native hardwood timber is very little, only becomes available when forest owners fell all the trees (mostly planted softwood) in the mountain. The imported hardwood timber is the only alternative.
So we, especially my colleague Hiroshi Yamaguchi, are focusing on maintaining second-growth hardwood forest for sustainable timber supply.

On this lesson we felled all the trees in ten square metres.
Students first cleared the undergrowth.

The professional foresters, the graduate of the Forest Academy Masahiro Shiota as one of them, offer Japanese Sake and salt before the felling.

Then they started felling.

We took thin disks out of the trunk and branches by every metre.

These are the disks taken out of oak trunk. We can work out the amount of annual growth of this tree by measuring the growth rings.
Those growth rings also tell the history of this forest. Most of the trees have 76 growth rings means that the forest were clear-cut 76 years ago.
The 45th growth ring have broader gap than others. The forest was probably thinned at that time. The growth of the trees was stimulated then given more space and sunshine.
Reseaching the growth rings is something like writing the history book of the forest.

Lots of disks for the detail mesurement at the college.

We also took most of the logs back to the college. We will use them for craft and furniture making. Green woodwork method is especially useful for those material.

This well-lighted forest was thinned last year.
The newest growth ring of those trees must be broader than the rest.

Japanese Life Style exhibition coming soon!

'Japanese Life Style' exhibition starts next Tuesday in Tokyo.
Various modern crafts, woodwork, pottery and textile, all inspired by folk crafts in Hida area, will be exhibited. Three tutors at the Gifu Forest Academy exhibits our woodwork.

I started making my works this month. Deadline is this weekend, still not sure if I can finish them all.

Let me show you a part of my work.
Originally this is one of Japanese tradional joineries for architecture to connect posts or beams end to end. The black piece on the photo called 'Shachi-sen' fixes two pieces together.
I was impressed by these clever devices and wanted to apply this to something else.
So what's this then? I will show you the entire image of my work later.

Kezurokai-handplaning enthusiasts' meeting

We went to 'Kezurokai' Festival in Seki on Sunday. Students of Craft and Furniture Making Dept., some members of Green Woodwork Association, and Hannu from Carl Malmsten School attended.

'Kezurokai' is the event of handplaning enthusiasts' group which compete making thin and beautiful shavings. This year is the 20th anniversary. This group now has branches in America and Germany. At the venue we saw a group of American visitors with 'Kanna(handplane)' T-shirts on.

The thickness of the shaving is only 3 micrometer.

Hannu tried thin-shaving making.

I tried Mr. Kamijo's big handplane who teaches at Agematsu vocational college.
Beginners like me can make quite thin shaving means that the sharpening and the adjustment of the base is the most important.

After this event we watched a slideshow of Carl Malmsten School presented by Hannu.
I helped a part of his ten weeks of work experience in Japan, and I myself learned a lot from him.
What surprised me the most is that Scandinavian people tend to buy modern classic furniture designed by famous designers and there is very little market for furniture designer/makers. Furniture exhibitions by solo makers are very rare.
He is trying to change the situation by planning a group exhibition of young makers next September in Stockholm.
I hope he received a lot of inspiration from the people he met in Japan during this ten weeks.
Good luck and see you in Stockholm next September!
