一宮市博物館の企画展「暮らしの中の民具〜竹細工〜」を見に行ってきました。

縄文時代からのカゴづくりの歴史や、江戸時代に竹細工の一大産地として栄えた一宮市瀬部地区の様子などが分かり、興味深い企画展です。また、日本各地、世界各地のカゴが展示されており、一宮で盛んに作られたコメアゲなどの竹製品、竹の育たない秋田県のイタヤカエデのカゴ、福島県のヤマブドウのカゴなど、実物を見たり触ったりできます。２月２６日まで。

２００８年６月３日から１１日まで、名古屋市で「木工家ウィーク2008」というイベントが実施されます。
これは、

Chairs—家具作家の仕事2008—
木工家３０人展'08
木工家がつくる木のスプーン展

という３つの作品展が異なる会場で同時に行われ、さらに

木工家ウィーク2008NAGOYA記念
「木工房からの仕事—今暮らしを考える—」

というフォーラムが、日本を代表する家具デザイナーであり建築家の長大作氏、近代の木工芸に造詣の深い諸山正則氏をゲストに開かれるものです。
木工家が大きなネットワークをつくり、社会へ発信していこうという、いままでになかった試みです。
これだけ多くの作家による作品を同時に見られるのは魅力です。

木工家３０人展'08には私が、
木工家がつくる木のスプーン展には、NPO法人グリーンウッドワーク協会代表の加藤慎輔さんと、森林文化アカデミー・木のコース卒業生の長岡かやさんが出展予定です。
ぜひ会場へ足をお運びください。

This is probably the first attempt in recent years for the Japanese woodworkers to make a network and launch events. It is going to be a rare opportunity to see many designer/makers' work in one place.

I will be exhibiting my works at 30 Woodworkers '08.
Shinsuke Kato, the director of Japan Green Woodwork Association, and Kaya Nagoaka, a graduate of Forest Academy, will show their spoons at the Wooden Spoons.

それを前に先週、２年生が展示する作品のプレゼンテーションが行われました。
２年生たちはこの１年間学んできたことをもとに、オリジナルの作品をつくることが求められます。
決められた時間内に、ある程度の個数をまとめてつくり、原価計算もします。
これを「商品化」という実習として行っています。

Last week the second year students finished their works for the exhibition and presented them in front of the teachers.
They are requested to make their original products according to what they learned during their first year.
They need to produce them in a batch within a limited shedule, calculate the cost and assess their productivity.
This 'merchandising' lesson is a part of our curriculum.

奈良町物語館は観光地の中心にあり、ゴールデンウイークのこの時期には毎日数百人が訪れます。はじめて一般の人たちに実際に自分たちがつくった作品を見てもらい、評価を受けます。
この期間中、お近くにおられるならぜひ会場へ。
直接手に取って、作者である学生たちに声をかけてあげてください。
The venue, Nara-machi Monogatari Kan is in the city centre of the old capital Nara. Hundreds of people come and see our exhibition every day. Students show their works to the public for the first time and receive many comments from them.

ご来場ありがとうございました/ thanks for visiting exhibition

東京・青山の桃林堂画廊で行われた「和の生活展」、無事終了しました。
連日大盛況で、しかも多くのお客様から「和の生活」の活動に対する高い関心を持っていただけたようでした。

この「和の生活」、飛騨に残る昔の暮らしの道具＝民具にヒントを得て、現代の暮らしにいかせるものを生み出そうとジャンルの異なる作家たちが制作を続けてきたものです。
今回ははじめて東京で、その成果を披露しました。

デザイン、素材の使い方、作り手の精神性、など７人の出展者はそれぞれ異なる方向から民具に光を当てました。
僕にとっては、民具の魅力はその優れた機能性。電力も石油も使えなかった時代に人々が積み重ねてきた工夫が、ひとつひとつの民具に凝縮されているように思います。

The Japanese Life Style exhibition closed on the 5th November. We had a lot of visitors during the week and many seemed to be interested in our activity.

This serial exhibition since 2002 is the challenge by various artists and craftspeople to create modern daily-use crafts out of the inspiration from indigenous crafts in Hida, Japan. This year we exhibited in Tokyo for the first time.

Every maker received different inspiration from Hida crafts; its design, the choice of material, the philosophy of those who made them...
What the Hida crafts attracted me the most was its superb function. People in the mountainous Hida area kept modifying their daily-use tools for generations. Each craft is the result of their long time effort. It works well without any electricity, any fuel, any metal fittings.

展示会前のブログで一部だけをお見せしていた、今回の僕の出品作です。
「継手（つぎて）の筆箱」と名前をつけています。
３種類あり、手前から「掛け継ぎ」「宮島継ぎ」「車知栓（しゃちせん）継ぎ」。

These are my work at the exhibition. 'The Joineries' pencil cases. I showed the part of this piece on my article before.
There are three different traditional Japanese joineries featured on them; from the front, 'Kake-tsugi', 'Miyajima-tsugi' and 'Shachisen-tsugi'.



建築の柱や梁どうしをつなぐときに用いられる「継手」。双方を組み合わせて栓を差し込むと抜けなくなります。
ボルトなどの金物を使わなくても二つの部材をがっちり組む、しかも組み上がりが美しい。これをうまく小物に生かせないか、と考えてつくったものです。

These joineries were used to connect posts and beams for traditional timber frame buildings. After joining two pieces, the peg in the middle fixes them tight.
I was impressed by these clever joineries and wanted to apply them to small crafts.

黒い栓を抜いて開くとこうなります。
To open the case, pull the peg out and slide the lid.


会期中、会場でいろんな方とお話をしました。
作家たちの作品を見て、「素敵ねえ・・・でもこんな作品を飾るにはまず美しい住まいがないと・・・」という声を何度か伺いました。
僕は逆に、ひとつのものの存在が生活空間を変えていくこともあるのでは、と思います。

この筆箱づくりでは、飛騨で僕自身が感じた張りつめた空気を込めました。
「和の生活ブログ」の作家インタビューでも話していますが、僕は飛騨にいると背筋がピンと伸びるような緊張感を感じます。自分自身が飛騨で木工修行したときの経験や、厳しい気候風土が生み出すものかもしれません。
そんな空気がこの筆箱を手にする人にも伝われば、と思いながら作ってみました。

I spoke with many visitors during the exhibition. Many seemed to be impressed by our works, and some said, 'they were so beautiful... but I need a beautiful house first to display such a beautiful piece'.
But as a maker, I believe only single piece of beautiful craft can change the atmosphere of the whole house.

When I was making these pencil cases I tried to put Hida's cool and sensitive atmosphere on every detail of the box. Hida, where I studied woodwork, always reminds me of hard training, cold winter, daily life with tension. I am hoping this pencil case would ooze such atmosphere in the hands of who uses it.



周囲のいろんな方の力添えがあってこの作品をつくることができました。
会場で嬉しい声もたくさんいただきました。
どうもありがとうございました。

この作品、もう少し発展させてみます。

I was able to make these pencil cases with a lot of help from my colleagues, friends, and people around me. I received a lot of compliments from the visitors. I would like to say thank you to all!

I will develop this project further.

木工、陶芸、染織などいろいろな分野の作り手たちが、飛騨の民具にヒントを得て現代の生活道具を提案する「和の生活展」、まもなくです。

１０月に入ってからあわてて制作にとりかかり、今週末の発送を前にようやくできあがりつつありますが・・・まだ予断を許しません。

'Japanese Life Style' exhibition starts next Tuesday in Tokyo.
Various modern crafts, woodwork, pottery and textile, all inspired by folk crafts in Hida area, will be exhibited. Three tutors at the Gifu Forest Academy exhibits our woodwork.

I started making my works this month. Deadline is this weekend, still not sure if I can finish them all.

いま作っているものの一部分だけお見せします。
これ、そもそもは建築の柱や梁をつないで長くするための工夫です。車知栓（しゃちせん）と呼ばれる木片（写真の黒い部分）を差し込むと、左右の材が固定されて抜けなくなるしくみ。
このしくみを何かに応用できないかと考えて、つくってみました。何を？それはまた後日。

Let me show you a part of my work.
Originally this is one of Japanese tradional joineries for architecture to connect posts or beams end to end. The black piece on the photo called 'Shachi-sen' fixes two pieces together.
I was impressed by these clever devices and wanted to apply this to something else.
So what's this then? I will show you the entire image of my work later.

稲垣有里さんの展示会/ exhibition of Yuri Inagaki

染織家の稲垣有里さんから展示会の案内をいただきました。
稲垣さんは、ものづくり研究会が事務局を務める「和の生活」展の出品者で、昨年度はアカデミーで織と染めの授業を担当していただいたこともあります。

奈良展大盛況/ successful start of Nara exhibition

先日お伝えしていたものづくり研究会の奈良展、大盛況の滑り出しです。
非常勤講師で出品者の一人でもある旭逸也さんから、会場の様子の報告が写真とともに届きました。

ゴールデンウイーク、そして奈良の古い町並みの中という絶好の時期と場所に恵まれ、初日は２００人、２日目は３００人もの人出があったようです。中には１時間以上もかけてじっくり作品を見る方もいらっしゃったとか。

We've had a very successful start with our annual exhibition in Nara.
Mr. Itsuya Asahi, our part-time lecturer and one of the exhibitors, sent me a report from the venue with some photos.

We are having hundreds of visitors every day thanks to the very good location and good time of the year (there are series of national holidays during these two weeks). Some visitors spend more than an hour to enjoy our new works.

会期中には教官や卒業生によるものづくり講座もありますが、既に松井が担当する「オリジナルの木のスプーンづくり」が行われました。これも多数の申込があって、参加者にはとても好評だったようです。
「自分で作ると、他人の作ったものを見る目も変わるのでしょう、ワークショップ終了後も熱心に展示を見る人が多かったように思います」というのが旭さんの感想でした。
作る技術に加え、講座を通して伝える技術を持つアカデミーの強みです。
There are some craft workshops listed during the exhibition and Tokinari Matsui's 'Spoon Making' already took place on Sunday 29th. We accepted many applicants and they all enjoyed making their original spoons.
Itsuya observed the workshop and reported "The participants enjoyed not only making but watching our works at the exhibition. Once they make on their own, their eyes open wider to see the professionals' work."
This is the advantage of Forest Academy: we have skills to run workshops as well as skills to make.

谷進一郎さんの展示会/ Exhibition of Shin-ichro Tani

ご紹介するのが遅くなってしまいましたが、去年アカデミーに来ていただいた信州の木工家・谷進一郎さんから展示会の案内が届きました。
いつも精力的に作品づくりをしておられて、刺激を受けます。
５月２０日までと会期が長いので、横浜へお出かけの方はぜひいらしてみてください。

Mr. Shin-ichiro Tani, a woodworker in Nagano prefecture, is having a solo exhibition in Yokohama. He is one of Japan's leading furniture makers and his constant passion for producing new works always inspires me.

人力ろくろでコマづくり/ turning a top on the pole lathe

ただいま開催中のものづくり研究会・奈良展では、われわれ教官３人と卒業生の１人が一般向けのものづくり講座も実施します。
僕は５月５日「こどもの日スペシャル」として、人力ろくろを使ったコマづくりをやる予定です。
Tutors and a graduate of Craft and Furniture Dept. are going to run craft workshops at our annual exhibition in Nara.
I am to run a top turning workshop using a pole lathe on Children's day, the fifth of May.

やります！と宣言して広報に載せたものの、実はコマづくりは初めて。子どもがすべて人力で丸太からコマをつくるなんて、うまくいくのかどうか・・・。
そこでアカデミーの学生の息子さんで近くの小学校に通うコウイチ君に実験台になってもらって、今週は道具の改良やコマの試作をしていました。
The schedule of the workshops is already announced, but actually I have no experience of turning a top on the pole lathe. I spent a whole week to experiment a top turning with my advisor Koichi Yamamura, a son of a student at the Forest Academy.

コウイチ少年のアドバイスに従って（彼の指摘の的確さは大人顔負け）、踏みやすいように踏み板のサイズを変えたり、コマづくり専用の金具を取り付けたり、いろいろ工夫してみました。
I modified the pole lathe according to Koichi's advice. His advices were so appropriate and helpful for me. I changed the size of pedal and attached bearings to hold the shaft.



試作してもらったら大成功！
回しながら色を付けたりして楽しめます。
当日は限定１０人の予約制です。どんなコマができるか、また結果を報告するのでお楽しみに。お近くの方は、ぜひ見に来てください！
Koichi then made a sample and it proved the modification was successful. He enjoyed putting some colour on the top as well as turning it on the lathe.
